Petition · San Francisco, California

Start a community seed library in the county library system

To: the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (11 districts) with an elected Mayor

Open-pollinated seed can be saved and replanted; hybrid seed does not come true from saved seed, and patented seed can’t legally be saved. A seed library lends seed at planting time and takes back a share at harvest. Seed Savers Exchange keeps a collection of more than 25,000 varieties. We ask San Francisco and its library to start one.

When it reaches the goal it’s handed to the officials named above at a public meeting, and their answer is posted online. This is a petition to your elected officials — like the clipboard at the courthouse door. It does not put anything on the ballot; that takes the state’s official petition process. Names are never shown publicly. County Commons — an independent, nonpartisan public-records project.
