To: the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (11 districts) with an elected Mayor
A RAND review of decades of studies found that people who took part in education while locked up had 43% lower odds of returning to prison. In 2023, about 70% of people in U.S. jails had not been convicted of the charge they were held on (Bureau of Justice Statistics). We ask San Francisco to include classroom, trade-shop, kitchen and garden space in any new or renovated jail.

When it reaches the goal it’s handed to the officials named above at a public meeting, and their answer is posted online. This is a petition to your elected officials — like the clipboard at the courthouse door. It does not put anything on the ballot; that takes the state’s official petition process. Names are never shown publicly. County Commons — an independent, nonpartisan public-records project.
